The winner in the Documentary-Historical Category is the DVD "Seeking Freedom" about the antebellum Freedom Suits from the St. Louis Circuit Court. The 45-minute documentary featured Circuit Court Judge Mason as narrator. Filming and interviews began in 2003 in the same time frame as the launch of the Freedom Suits on the website for the collaborative project of the Missouri State Archives, the St. Louis Circuit Court, and the American Culture Studies program at Washington University.
Seeking Freedom featured onsite footage of documents, interviews with historical and legal experts, and additional graphics/audio dramatizations from the memoir of Freedom Suit plaintiff Lucy Ann Britton, also known as Lucy Delaney. Among those featured in the documentary were Kenneth Winn, Missouri State Archivist (at the time of the production); Archivist Michael Everman of the St. Louis Circuit Court Historical Records Project (now Missouri State ArchivesSt. Louis); Bob Moore, Historian for the National Park Service; Kristin Zapalac from the historic preservation office of the Department of Natural Resources; Law Professor Camille Nelson of St. Louis University and Washington University. and Professors David Konig, Wayne Fields, and Peter Kastor of the American Culture Studies program at Washington University.
HEC TV presented three live "on air and online" telecasts dealing with the documentary and the Freedom Suits in September. Two live interactive sessions were filmed at the Missouri State Archives-St. Louis.
